Crowns

What are Crowns?

The crown is the visible part of the tooth. An artificial crown covers a weak tooth above the gum line and protects it. They are made up of metal or porcelain, or just porcelain with metal bits mixed in to increase the strength.

What will my dentist do?

  • The dentist will shape and form the artificial tooth to replicate the characteristics of a normal tooth.
  • Preparation time will depend on the damage to the tooth and whether or not it will need a build up of filling.
  • 'Removing the nerve' may have to take place if the tooth needs to be root-filled first. Often the crown is held by a peg in the root canal, that is if a lot of tooth is missing.
  • The dentist will use soft, mouldable material to make exact 'impressions' of the tooth that has to be crowned and also of the nearby teeth. This is then passed onto a dental technician who uses the impression to make the crown the exact size needed.
  • The use of a thin cord would be used to hold the gum away from the tooth for a more accurate impression around the edges.
  • A temporary crown would be put over the tooth until the permanent crown has been made. The temporary can cope with chewing but not as strong as the permanent.
  • Your dentist will make small adjustments once your crown is fitted to make sure that you can bite comfortably. The crown is tried on first and then glued into place.

What are the benefits?

  • Crowns are very strong and look exactly like natural teeth in which the colour and shape can be assigned to match current teeth.
  • If the tooth is strong underneath the crown, the crown can last for many years if you look after your teeth and mouth.
  • Crowns can also improve the appearance of misshapen or discoloured teeth.

In my experience the whole team shows the same level of professionalism and respect for their client/patient. Roy and his dental nurse - Claudia I think her name is - work quickly together with precision and confidence, and convey an absolute assuredness that they can fix whatever is going on. Claudia anticipates Roy's movements which means that he rarely has to ask her to do anything; she is one step ahead all the time. It turned out that I had an abscess on a cracked tooth, had been in a lot of pain and was upset. Roy was very patient and caring with me; thank you Roy for taking a moment to help me regain some balance. The tooth is still painful today but I know that I could call to ask for advice before my next appointment in three weeks. Thank you everyone.

For years I avoided dental visits after several bad experiences in the mid to late 60's, I was recommended to visit Abby Dundas. I did this after a lot of patience & understanding on Abby's part I can now attend & even managed after a severe infection to have a difficult extraction. If I could have had it done by any other dentist at this time I'm not sure but with Abby & the way she has built a high level of trust with me I feel confident my dental health will continue
